Henley-on-Klip : Another Charming Small Town

  • May 3
  • 2 min read

So, I found myself in another small town again - completely unplanned.

A last-minute change of plans for a new hiking trail somehow turned into a full-blown small-town adventure - as it does.

So when my one hiking bud casually said, “Let’s just go to Bass Lake, in Henley on Klip” the name hit a strange nerve - familiar, but not in a logical way.

Naturally, I didn’t argue.

You don’t ignore cosmic nudges.

That’s how you end up in places with no cappuccino - or worse - regular coffee.

The Detour Nobody Asked For

On the way, the same instigator suggested a quick stop at a the "Blockhouse".

Because apparently, we’re the kind of people who say yes to vague roadside history.

The result? A spontaneous off-road wander featuring an abandoned structure, aggressively good graffiti, and far too many photo opportunities.

The blockhouse itself stood there like it had seen things - and honestly, probably had.

Exactly the kind of detour that makes the day.

Small Town, Big Personality

And here’s the thing about small towns in South Africa - it's not only about the scenery.

It's about the people.

There’s a different rhythm.

Less urgency.

Less performance.

More actual humanity.

But we do tend to glorify the polished, picture-perfect destinations.

The curated ones.

The slightly rough-around-the-edges places - the unpolished diamonds?

Those hit differently.

They feel real.

Less filtered.

More honest.

Henley on Klip fits comfortably into that category - effortlessly itself, with no need to perform - which, ironically, makes it memorable.

The Lake That Wasn’t “Just a Lake”

The plan - walk around a lake, feel productive, go home.

Expectations - a basic stretch of water, maybe a dusty path, possibly a duck if the odds are in our favour.

Reality - Bass Lake decided to be… impressive.

From the entrance alone, it was obvious this wasn’t just a casual loop for your daily steps.

It’s structured.

Thought-out.

Almost like someone cared.

There are proper facilities including a charming restaurant on site coffee shop.

Service? Great.

Food? Delicious.

Patrons? Delightful.

The kind of place where you sit down “for a quick drink” and you’re quietly reconsidering your entire urban existence in favour of a small town with a slightly slower internet speed and significantly better air.

And the lake itself? Beautiful, clean and peaceful.

Will I Be Back?

Absolutely. Yes.

When a place shows up in your life before you go looking for it, chances are you’re not done with it.

So yes, Henley on Klip… I’ll be back.

Try to contain your excitement.
