The question is asked way too often.
“You know where you’d love to hike?” they say.
And I brace myself - because I already know what’s coming....some overseas destination.
Usually one that involves a 15-hour flight, three connecting trains, a questionable hostel, and coffee that costs the same as a day's groceries.
Well, thanks Glenda, but actually… I already do know where I’d love to hike.
Right here.
In this country.
This absurdly beautiful, ridiculously diverse, jaw-droppingly scenic country that I probably couldn’t explore fully even if I started today and lived to 110.
Trails That Put “The Camino” to Shame
Oh, and Brad - bless your cousin doing the Camino in Spain. Inspirational stuff. Truly.
But here’s a little secret: we have our own Camino-style trails. Ones where you don’t need a visa, a Schengen stamp, or a second mortgage.
Ones that take you through mountain passes, vineyards, coastal cliffs, and fields so alive they practically sing.
Need me to go on?
The Cape: The OG Hiking Destination
And yes, you might’ve heard of this little place called The Cape. You know - the one people from all over the world either rave about or dream of visiting?
Yes, that one.
It’s basically our local version of hiking paradise. Mountains that drop into the ocean, trails that twist through wine farms, and views like no other.
But sure, let’s all rush off to Spain instead.
Where I’ll need a valid passport, a visa, and a cappuccino will set me back close to R 100.
Because apparently, suffering financially is part of the spiritual journey.
Oh, and Brad.....while I have your attention....we also have The Leopard Trail, The Otter Trail, The Whale Trail, The Drakensberg Grand Traverse, The Outeniqua Hiking Trail, The Amatola Hiking Trail, And let’s not forget - The Pondo Trail,
Oh… and Brad - one last thing before you wander off: if I absolutely must share the trail with fellow hikers, I’m sticking to the warm, wonderful South Africans.
Hike Local, Feel Global
Let’s stop always selling our country and it's people short.
Here’s the truth: South Africa doesn’t need to compete with the world’s hiking destinations.
It is one.
Every trail here - whether it’s a coastal path, a forest wander, or a Karoo slog under the sun - is different, challenging, breathtaking, and unforgettable.
We’ve got the diversity, the beauty, and the kind of landscapes people travel halfway around the world to see. And yet, they’re right here - a tank of fuel away.
So next time someone says, “You know where you’d love to hike?” I’ll just smile sweetly (I know… shocking,) and say:
“Yes, Glenda. Here. Right here.”
