Kloofwaters Farm: Hiking & Camping (Sort Of)

So, for those new here… a quick recap. Day 2 of "The Little Group That Could" weekend, led (by mistake) by Esti from Saunterers.

After our Saturday hike at Eagle Cove, we had booked to camp at Kloofwaters Farm.

Some of the group camped from Friday. My hiking bud, Rosemary, and I? Oh, we are not Friday campers. We’re adventurous, yes, but not "feral creatures” adventurous.

The Cabin vs. The Tent Debate (There Was No Debate)

The Tribe
The Tribe

When showing us around, Esti oh so casually, points to a log cabin and says, “There’s a cabin there if you’d rather not use your tent.”

Excuse me, WHAT? Rosemary and I were through that door, bags down and beds claimed faster than you can say mosquito repellent.”

Because, truthfully, I do not need to suffer unnecessarily. If there’s absolutely no other option, fine - I’ll martyr myself on the cold, uneven ground like a “true camper.” But if there’s a mattress and four walls? Oh, sweet summer child, I’m there.

…Unless, of course, the “room” actually means nine other beds jammed in, five of them bunks, and suddenly it feels like summer camp for grown-ups. In that case, yes — hand me the tent and I’ll suffer in peace.

An Umbrella - Every Hiker Needs One
An Umbrella - Every Hiker Needs One

Sunrise, Sass, and a “Proper” Hike

Sunday morning we woke up early enough to watch the sunrise - which, in my opinion, is the only respectable time to start a hike. But alas, this weekend was not only about me (tragic), so we only started the trail around 8:00.

And it turned out to be a proper hike, not the farm stroll I was expecting. It was peaceful, had a slow but mild incline and a glistening stream.

Some of the ladies dipped their toes, very daintily.

Someone even whipped out an umbrella from the abyss of their backpack - because of course they did.

Meanwhile, Esti — our resident wild card — skipped the subtlety entirely, went full body plunge, only to then bum-slide her way around.

Quick Escape Before Real Life Hit

After a light hearted two-hour hike Rosemary and I left around midday. Perfect, because for me… a hike isn’t even real unless it’s immortalized in 347 photos and a blog post to etch it into my chaotic brain forever.

Honestly, though, this day wasn’t about mileage or mountain peaks.

It was all about a fabulous group of ladies reveling in nature, embracing quirks, chasing laughter, and diving headfirst into pure spontaneity.

And me? I actively avoid laughter, possess zero quirks, and spontaneity scares me like trying to pee through a shewee.

My role? Snapping pics and sprinting to keep up. Like an unpaid intern with a camera.

So thank you, lovely ladies—and of course Esti—for making adventure happen.

NOTE TO SELF

Keep tossing those little seeds out. Worst case? Esti shows up with a full itinerary and a cabin key.

ON A FINAL NOTE

And this—this—is exactly why I’m forcing myself to make peace with communal life. For under R 330, we scored two beautiful hikes, a sleepover, and a weekend stuffed with memories.

Honestly, where else are you getting that kind of return on investment?

(TO)SOLO OR (NO)SOLO

For me? (NO)SOLO. But for directionally competent humans, probably doable.
