My Hiking Date
So, my hiking date for the day - Boris, the trail connoisseur with a coat so glorious it deserves its own Instagram. Yes, THAT Boris — the self-appointed CEO of “No Leads Allowed”.
His human, Basil, tags along too. We’re a trio now.
The Pre-Hike Experience
After some Googling, and a few “Hi, do you allow Very Important Dogs off-lead?” phone calls, we found Stone Hill Hiking Trail - a place so dog-friendly it practically wags at you.

Fun fact: I’d been there before… by accident. (Don’t ask.) This time, though, the stars aligned and I arrived intentionally.
From the first friendly phone call to the warm welcome on arrival, everything just felt right.
The River Walk Teaser
We started off on the River Walk, a short, scenic detour that’s food for your soul - all rushing water and crisp air.

The rocks along the river looked like hand-sculpted clay art, giving the whole area that rustic, earthy look.
Boris gave the river his signature “absolutely not” look and trotted onward....ears flapping....tail high.

Stone Hill Trail: A Dog Paradise
The main Stone Hill trail is less of a hike and more of a love letter to dogs. Seriously - splash pools just for fluffballs and benches with memorial plaques and stones to furry friends who’ve walked those paths before.
A few human tributes are scattered among them too, along with ten overgrown, unmarked mounds, which are believed to be the resting places of Boer soldiers.
A whisper from history blending into this haven built for peace, paws, and reflection.

Even the trail markers have personality — clear and quirky.
Difficulty-wise? Think “Sunday stroll.” The trail’s mostly flat with a few gentle inclines, perfect for casual hikers.
We had the entire trail to ourselves — just us and the kind of silence that resets you.

After our hike, we met Caroline, one of the owners, who told us that “Harry’s Meander” was named after her late Great Dane, Harry — a gentle giant now immortalized in trail form.
Coffee Requires a Booking

Post-hike we learned the kitchen only cooks to order.
So remember - book meals ahead if you plan on refueling here.
Why Stone Hill Deserves a Spot on Your “Must-Hike” List
It is located just an hour from Johannesburg North and is dog-friendly, beautifully maintained, and full of thoughtful details that make it feel personal rather than commercial.
The owners and their friendly assistant, Bukhosi, genuinely care about every guest, whether they’re two-legged or four.

So, thank you, Boris - you handsome fluff goblin - for introducing me to Basil. Without you, these peaceful, tail wagging adventures would never have happened.
10/10 would follow Boris again. Oh, and fine - you too, Basil.
