Vaal Marina: The Tiny Town I Apparently Can’t Quit

So when I say I’ll be back, I will be back.
Not in a dramatic action-movie way - more in a “this tiny town unexpectedly stole my heart and now I can’t leave it alone” kind of way.
A few months ago, I visited Vaal Marina - mostly because the Vaal Marina hiking trail had landed quite recently on my “trails I need to hike” list.
My hiking bud Rosemary had also been staying there temporarily, which felt like a convenient excuse to drag her into another hike with me..
Turns out, it was a brilliant idea.
Vaal Marina
The first time around, we never actually got to the Vaal Marina Hike.
We had a nice chilled walk around the dam and through the little town itself.

Nothing overly dramatic happened.
No mountain rescues.
No cliff-hanging near-death experiences.
No profound life revelations while staring meaningfully across the water pretending to heal spiritually.
And yet, I completely fell in love with the place.
It's wholesome - quiet, unfussy, friendly, and alarmingly peaceful.
Frankly, I wasn’t emotionally prepared for that level of community spirit from a place with approximately three roads and a dam.
After one day there, I realised I’d barely scratched the surface - so naturally, I said I’d return.
.
And return I did.
The Return
After my last post, GeM Vaal kindly offered to host me for the weekend, which really just enabled my growing Vaal Marina fixation.
It also gave me the perfect excuse to finally tackle the actual Vaal Marina Hiking Trail.

I arrived early, met up with Rosemary, and we parked outside "Die Stasie" - a charming little restaurant we’d briefly wandered through on the previous visit without actually eating there.
A tragic oversight, as it turns out.
Then off we went on our hike.
The Trail
This trail was exactly like the town itself - wholesome to an almost unreasonable degree.
And yes, before anyone asks, it was an actual trail.
Always encouraging when a hiking trail commits to the concept.
There were a few mild inclines at the beginning - to reassure us that we were technically exercising a bit - but after that, it settled into a very relaxed, easy walk.
Mostly views of the dam, open spaces, fresh air, and reflecting everything of the town itself.
We ended up walking around six kilometres, which felt like the ideal start to what was shaping up to be an excellent weekend.

Honestly, this trail is a reminder that not every hike needs to involve spreadsheets, costs, permits, survival snacks, and emotional resilience.
Sometimes it’s just… there.
Existing quietly.
Waiting to be walked.
Die Stasie
After the hike, we headed back to where we had parked our cars for brunch.
Again - ridiculously charming.
This was naturally my cue to aggressively photograph everything while poor Rosemary sat there silently regretting every life choice that led her to that table.
And listen - I’m not trying to become a food critic here - but the chicken livers were genuinely the best I’ve ever had.
Which is honestly rude, because now I have standards.

GeM Vaal: The Unexpected Luxury Accommodation
Thereafter, we made our way to GeM Vaal.
Now, when somebody says “accommodation in a tiny dam town,” my expectations adjust accordingly.
I prepare for practical.
Possibly rustic.
Potentially a decorative fish mounted somewhere for no clear reason.
What I did not expect was to walk in and immediately wonder whether I had accidentally entered the wrong accommodation entirely.
Honestly, my next post will have to be entirely dedicated to the accommodation because it deserves its own spotlight.
But for now, let me just say this - Vaal Marina, you remain absurdly delightful.
And your casual little hiking trail that quietly exists - very on brand.
