Wolwespruit Bike & Trail Park: Not the Plan, But Still Delivers

Every great hiking story starts with a solid plan. This one starts with Boris, his person Basil, and me - clearly the weakest link in the organisational department - always.
I had a weekend hike planned. Basil casually mentioned she could squeeze in a morning hike. Naturally, I—"local hag with zero self-control"—said yes.
The logic was flawless: hike in the morning, be on the road to my real weekend adventure by noon. What could go wrong?
The Plan (That Wasn’t)
"Monte de Dios" lived rent-free on my hiking list.
No idea how it got there. No idea when.
But Google said "dog friendly", so obviously… locked in.

Early start. High spirits. And both Basil and I confidently assumed the other one had phoned ahead.
Important note: neither of us had.
Our only concern then?
“Is it off-lead?”
Not, you know… “Is it actually a hiking trail?”
On arrival we’re told - very politely - that they don’t do hikes anymore.
So. Is this our fault?
Of course it is.

But also… please remove the hiking trail from your website.
Just saying.
Wolwespruit Nature Reserve
Basil, hero of the day, realised that Wolwespruit was nearby.
I’ve done it twice. Basil once. It wasn’t on the to-do list, but let’s be honest—Wolwespruit is the Modderfontein of default hikes.
It just shows up when plans fall apart.
Decision made: 7 km route.
Seeing Wolwespruit in a New Light

This was the first time I’d hiked Wolwespruit with a strong focus on photography, and honestly? I saw it completely differently.
It was more beautiful than I remembered.
Yes, it’s close to the highway.
Yes, suburbia lurks.
But weirdly… it didn’t bother me this time.
I’ve officially developed a soft spot for urban and suburban hiking trails.
They’re not the same as remote mountain trails - but they’re different, accessible, and just as fabulous in their own way.

Trail Difficulty
The 7 km includes several inclines.
Not beginner-friendly, but very doable for regular hikers.
If memory serves, the 5 km route is flatter - but don’t quote me on that.
I won’t over-explain the trail because honestly, most people in Pretoria have hiked Wolwespruit at least once.
It’s well-known, well-maintained, and delivers exactly what you want from a suburban trail.
